Us Computer Science majors always get a bad rap for being socially inept. Being awkward in conversation, looking at our feet when we walk around campus, coding on Friday nights... yeah, that's us.

But you know, the art students aren't much better.

I'm taking a half-semester course in sound design for interactive media ("sound" as a noun, not an adjective). The class is held in a multimedia computer cluster, tricked out with crazy sound and video equipment, which is naturally in the Fine Arts building.

This may be a bit of a logical leap, but I'm going to presume that most of the students you run across in the Fine Arts buildings are art students. And therefore, presumably, possessing more social graces than us code monkeys.

And yet, on my way down the stairs, I was nearly run into by two such students, walking on what was to them the left side of the stairway.

One of these students was actually hopping back and forth, taking two steps at a time with giant diagonal strides so as to ensure that nobody could safely walk down the stairs.

Maybe it's just because we geeks are always thinking inside the box. Maybe we need to free our minds and open ourselves up to more artistic ways of walking up the stairs.

Or maybe it's just that nobody at CMU knows how to behave in public.
