I was awakened about an hour and a half ago by a loud, sharp, familiar sound coming from my air conditioner.

My air conditioner has a metal chassis which is very good at conducting the sound of water dripping onto it from the roof, two stories up. The resulting sound is very loud and very sharp and impossible to sleep through.

Taking out the air conditioner altogether will not be a viable solution, especially once the temperature gets up to 80 or so, nor am I willing to take it out every time it rains and put it back in afterwards. I've tried wrapping a towel around the inside of the unit. I've tried moving it to the other window, in case the dripping was from the air conditioner on the 7th floor. I've tried covering my head with a pillow.

I am at my wit's end. I beg for your advice.
